Welcome to Saryo Shohaku, a delightful cafe nestled in the serene surrounds of Suizenji Koen, Kumamoto. Here at this hidden gem, you can experience a harmonious blend of traditional Japanese flavors and calming interiors that invite you to unwind and savor the moment.

Saryo Shohaku specializes in a unique menu that showcases the best of Japanese cuisine, with a particular emphasis on their acclaimed curry dishes. Several reviews echo the sentiments of visitors who have called their curry “absolutely divine” and “the best in Japan.” Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the curry is slow-cooked for a week to ensure a depth of flavor that is both rich and fruity. When you indulge in their curry, you’re not just eating; you’re tasting a culinary labor of love.

If you’re looking for something sweet to accompany your meal, be sure to try their kakigori, a finely shaved ice delight topped with luscious matcha syrup. Mara, a satisfied customer, found it “delicious” and wished she had ordered extra syrup, illustrating how each component of Saryo Shohaku’s menu can elevate your experience.

The atmosphere inside the cafe is just as inviting as the food. Customers describe a tranquil space, perfect for curling up with a book or simply soaking in the peaceful ambiance. Couples like Sally Oates have enjoyed watching the care that goes into preparing their meals from the bar seating, making every visit feel personal and engaging.

With a single dedicated staff member orchestrating the culinary artistry and front-of-house services, you might experience a slower pace, reminiscent of a bygone era where quality outshines speed. Though some have noted this as a minor drawback, the warmth and friendliness of the staff make every moment worthwhile. You’ll feel at home as they take the time to engage you and share insights about the food you’re about to enjoy.

Saryo Shohaku also features a quaint space where visitors can explore local ceramics and trinkets, making it not just a cafe, but a cultural experience. Whether you’re visiting Kumamoto for pleasure or passing through, stopping at Saryo Shohaku should be at the top of your itinerary. It’s a place where every spoonful of curry tells a story, and every sip of tea soothes the soul.

If you find yourself in Kumamoto, don’t miss the chance to encounter the heart of Japanese culinary craft and hospitality at Saryo Shohaku. This remarkable cafe delivers a unique experience that lingers long after you leave—one that you will eagerly anticipate revisiting.

Incredible curry! The one woman working here paid such attention to detail and we loved sitting at the bar and watching her make the shaved ice and drinks. The best curry we've had in Japan- rich and fruity, great sized portions and lots of rice. Two options for food but I can guarantee it's all done very well, apparently the curry was cooked for a week!

Great discovery in Kumamoto. Nice interiors - feels like you can dine here while reading a book. Very quiet and calming place. Their kakigori was delicious - I really wished I have requested for more matcha syrup. The owner was also very nice Will definitely visit this shop again.

The curry was absolutely divine, it is prepared one week in advance reinforcing the flavor, probably the best i had in Japan, I really recommend it !!

we shared the delicious boiled suizenjina tofu and inari sushi set. the royalmilk tea my sister ordered was really good too (she said it was the best she’d ever had). it sufficed as a snack for two small asian girls. the staff were warm and friendly and helped teach us how to prepare and eat the food. there is a small space next to the dining area where they sold ceramics and other trinkets. i really enjoyed the food and the cosy, modern interior!

The place looks very nice and is good for a rest, a drink, a snack. There was one person taking orders and preparing them , which was slow. The door was kept open so it was cold as the seats are at the bar facing the entrance. The prices are a bit above average. The lady prepared everything very nicely.

Had a wonderful simple yet tasty lunch and a piece of cheesecake served with olive oil and sea salt. The cake was to die for.
